Patterns Patterns, A day in the life: How adaptive buildings are making people comfortable
Autumn/Winter 2011
Adaptive Building Initiative’s adaptive shading technologies are designed toward the two-part goal of generating energy savings and improving occupant comfort. To illustrate how ABI’s buildings achieve the latter, Patterns – the magazine of ABI co-founding partner Buro Happold – explores several ABI projects through a series of specific typical-day user narratives.

AHHAA Science Centre ABI installed an adaptive conference room wall within Baltic science museum
The AHHAA Science Centre, located in Tartu, Estonia, hired ABI and Hoberman to create dynamic installations for the centre, the largest of its kiind in the Baltics. ABI installed its Adaptive Fritting system within a glass conference room wall, imbuing the room with push-button privacy control.

UK architectural magazine Blueprint published an article on ABI principle Chuck Hoberman in their March 2011 issue - timed to coincide with the exhibition 'Living Form: The Transformable Work of Chuck Hoberman' being hosted by The Building Centre in London. The article discusses the wide range of Hoberman's career, focusing on his move into the realm of adaptive architecture, and to which the ideas and ideals he is applying.

Their varied perspectives provide an in-depth look into Tessellate’s design rational, mechanics and control, fabrication, shading efficacy, and environmental performance.

Adaptive Building Initiative and Buro Happold are sponsoring a three-day international conference on that will bring together leading practitioners, researchers and experts in the field of adaptive architecture. The conference will be organized into four modules: dynamic facades, transformable structures, bio-inspired aterials and building intelligence. Chuck Hoberman will be among the speakers presenting.

R+D Symposium ABI's Matthew Herman leads R+D Symposium virtual seminar on interactive and reactive buildings

Titled, Adaptive Building Initiative: Exploring the Future of Interactive and Reactive Building Systems, Matthew Herman's lecture will discuss adaptive building design; new adaptive technology development, prototyping and use; and the role of the architect within an adaptive building design team.
Part of the R+D Symposium virtual conference, the seminar will be viewable online on Friday, December 15th 2010, and earns 1.0 AIA CES Learning Unit.

R+D Awards 2010 HelioTrace receives 2010 R+D Awards citation
The HelioTrace Façade System was honored with a citation in the 2010 R+D Awards. Utilizing ABI's Strata™ system, the HelioTrace concept was conceived in partnership with Skidmore, Owings & Merril and the Permasteelisa Group, and originally received a citation from the AIA NY's Center for Architecture.

Celebratign Greenbuild 2010 ABI and event partners celebrate Greenbuild 2010 at Art Institute of Chicago

Adaptive Building Initiative partnered with Architect’s Newspaper, Buro Happold, Dow Building Solutions, Graphisoft and American Hydrotech to host a celebration of sustainability and the 2010 Greenbuild conference at the Art Institute of Chicago's Modern Wing. Attendance included hundreds of engineers, designers and architects.
The hundreds of engineers, designers and architects in attendance were given a first-hand look at new versions of ABI's Adaptive Fritting™ and Tessellate™ Intelligent Surfaces, demonstrated by three technology showpieces created by ABI especially for the event.

Simons Center for Geometry & PHysics ABI unveils new Tessellate™ system at SUNY Stony Brook

Adaptive Building Initiative created a dynamic installation for the Stony Brook Foundation’s new Center for Geometry and Physics. At once functional shading and art, the installation adorns the south-facing primary facade; its kinetic patterns create dynamic, ever-changing views, lighting and shadow-play while providing additional shading for the LEED Gold-status building's lobby.

Wyss Institute at Harvard University Two dynamic ABI installations welcome visitors to the Wyss Institute at Harvard University

The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering commissioned ABI to create an installation for the main entrance to its new home at Harvard University. An installation in two parts, it encompasses the main sliding glass doorway and an adjacent moving glass partition-wall, both incorporating new variations on ABI's Adaptive Fritting™ technology.

2010 Annual Design Review Adaptive Fritting receives an award in the I.D. Annual Design Review
ABI's Adaptive Fritting installation was chosen as an Honorable Mention Winner in the Environments category of I.D. Magazine's 2010 Annual Design Review.
The I.D. Annual Design Review has recognized the best in design since 1954, seeking each year to focus the submissions into a clear survey of the state of design.

IDEA 2010 Awards Two ABI systems win Silver IDEA 2010 awards
ABI's adaptive shading technologies have been recognized with two prestigious International Design Excellence Awards from IDSA and Business Week. Adaptive Fritting™, ABI's living glass shading technology, received a Silver IDEA in the Commercial & Industrial Products category. Emergent Surface, received a Silver IDEA in the Environments category. Demonstrating ABI's Strata™ system, Emergent Surface was comissioned for MoMA's Design and the Elastic Mind exhibition.

POLA Ginza Building Façade Innovative adaptive façade transforms POLA's new Tokyo headquarters
October 2009 marked the opening of Japanese cosmetics manufacturer POLA's new headquarters in the Ginza district. The Adaptive Building Initiative and Hoberman Associates collaborated with architects Yasuda Atelier and Nikken Sekkei to develop an adaptive shading system for the building's façade.

Harvard GSD Hoberman and ABI unveil new technology at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard.
On display: March 30 – May 15, 2009
Hoberman and ABI's Adaptive Fritting installation demonstrates a new technology for variable transparency surfaces, allowing dynamic control over shading, thermal gain and privacy. The installation is part of Harvard's Ecological Urbanism exhibition in Gund Hall Gallery.
A parallel conference, Ecological Urbanism: Alternative and Sustainable Cities of the Future ran from April 3 - 5, and included Chuck Hoberman as a guest speaker.
